Team Invacare's Kurt Fearnley Wins 4th Straight Oz Day - 1/26/2009
Louise Sauvage, former Team Invacare athlete, comes out of retirement to finish second
(Accessibility.com.au) -- Kurt Fearnley was untroubled in securing his fifth consecutive Oz Day 10 kilometre wheelchair race in Sydney today, before his close friend and training partner Christie Dawes took the spoils in a thrilling sprint finish in the women's category.
Fearnley was simply too strong in perfect conditions, powering away to post victory in a time of 21 minutes and 48 seconds (21:48), almost half a minute faster than the chasing pack.
Dawes, a veteran of 16 Oz Day races, had never broken the winner's tape in the Australia Day shootout in The Rocks District, and made sure her maiden victory would be one to truly savor when she defied a brave challenge from Paralympic legend Louise Savage in a frantic finale.
