Magic in the Air... - 3/21/2009

This past weekend in the city of Denver, CO the four best teams in the National Wheelchair Basketball Association's (NWBA) Championship Division put everything on the line for the league's national title. This year's Final 4 featured the Arkansas Rollin' Razorbacks (#1 seed), Dallas Mavericks (#3 seed), Utah Jazz (#4 seed) and the team led by Top End's own Paul Schulte and Jeremy Campbell, the Orlando Magic (#2 seed).

Semifinal play saw the Razorbacks take down the Jazz by a score of 63-61. On the other side of the semi-finals, the Dallas Mavericks and the Orlando Magic faced off for the 5th time of the season. Led by dominating play by Jason Van Beek, and the intensely focused leadership of Paul Schulte, the Magic were able to outlast their way into the final with the Razorbacks by defeating the Mavericks by a score of 63-56. Top End engineer Paul Schulte had these comments after helping the Magic reach their first ever national championship game as a franchise: "We did a better job of being patient out there and waiting to see what we were being given by the defense. We knew going in if we played well we'd give ourselves our chance and even though we didn't play our best game today, we did just enough to earn the win."

The stage was set for the championship game, featuring the top 2 seeds in the nation. Early in the game guard Jarrad Allen of the Arkansas Razorbacks dropped an assault of three pointers which opened many lanes for world class big man Jeff Glassbrenner. The Magic fought diligently from down 11 points in the first half to close the gap to just 1 point going into the halftime. Orlando relied heavily on full court pressure by Schulte and Campbell on Jeff Glasbrenner in an attempt to make the other Razorback players be the ones to carry the load offensively in the second half. As time began running low, Top End customer service representative Jeremy Campbell hit several backbreaking baskets to seal the deal for the Orlando Magic by a score of 65-54.

The Orlando Magic played for something extra this weekend; their coach's son, Chris Lilly, whom also was a team member of the Magic passed away just 8 days ago. Jeremy Campbell said after the game, "This game was never about anything other than playing as hard as we could for Chris Lilly, and giving his father, and our coach, something positive to remember about what has been a difficult and trying season."

In part of the post game celebration, Paul Schulte was named as one of the five members of the All-Tournament team and Jeremy Campbell was named the Championship Division’s MVP.
